Mizu Series

The Mizu series began 30 years ago as a playful way to explore expressive brushwork on a small scale before committing to large-scale paintings on canvas. Working with monotypes of gestural marks on large sheets of dyed and textured Asian papers, I arbitrarily cut them into six-inch squares to create “palettes” of color, mass and line. Arranging these squares into long horizontal bands began to evoke psychologically charged landscapes of storms, brush fires and tidal waves and led me to my current interest in landscape.
